Service to the Nation: From Fisherman to Parliament

This book is an inspiring biography of Muhammad Yunus, S.Pi., M.M., a fisherman’s son of Bugis-Selayar descent, born and raised in Batam. He witnessed firsthand the dramatic transformation of his homeland, from a densely forested island with quiet coastal villages into an internationally scaled industrial city that became Indonesia’s flagship gateway facing Singapore. His story begins with childhood memories of Kampung Jodoh, which burned down twice; his arduous pursuit of education, culminating in a bachelor’s degree in fisheries from the University of Riau; and his struggle to survive as a motorcycle taxi driver, a fisherman who nearly drowned three times and lost his father at sea, and a sand miner who built a business from scratch. Amid all these hardships, he also experienced a romantic quest, searching for a mysterious girl he glimpsed at a soccer field, armed only with the clue of an orange bicycle, who eventually became his lifelong companion.

From the lowest points of his life, Yunus rose to enter politics and was elected as a member of the Batam City Council for four consecutive terms (2009–2029). This book chronicles not only his legislative work in Commission IV, which oversees public welfare, but also his roles as Chairman of the Indonesian Marching Band Association (PDBI) in Batam, General Secretary of the Malay Customary Institution (LAM) in Batam, and a key figure behind the enactment of Regional Regulation No. 1/2018 on Cultural Advancement. Written in a poetic yet balanced literary style, the biography explores the philosophical, psychological, and spiritual values that shaped Yunus’s character: the perseverance inherited from his father, the courage forged on steep cliffs and in eerie forests, the humility learned as a motorcycle taxi driver, and the unwavering commitment to his grassroots roots. This book is more than the story of a politician; it is a reflection on how a fisherman’s son can become a grounded leader, and a reminder that amid the rapid currents of modernity, timeless values must be preserved, that true success lies in never forgetting where we came from, and always returning to share with those we left behind. ~
